Vinovia Wines is an importer and eCommerce business specializing in wine distribution. As a B2B business, they supply wines across the US and are well known for their curated selection of premium wines. They aimed to expand their direct-to-customer model, build an engaging wine club subscription service, and improve the overall eCommerce experience with a premium website.
When they approached us with this vision, we knew this wasn’t just about adding a shopping cart to a website, it was about translating their wine expertise and premium service into a digital experience that wine enthusiasts would love!
The Challenge More Than Just Selling Wines
Vinovia Wines, already a trusted name in B2B wine importing, saw an exciting opportunity in the direct-to-consumer (D2C) market. However, they quickly realized that selling wine online isn’t as simple as other products because enthusiasts expect a personal touch, detailed information about their purchases, and a seamless delivery experience.
Our Approach: Building a Wine Lover’s Dream
Wine isn’t just about taste; it’s about the story, the place, and the passion behind each bottle. To bring that richness online, we created a story-driven D2C eCommerce website designed to captivate wine lovers at every click.
When customers browse through the wine collections, they’re not just looking at bottles; they’ve transported the vineyards, historic French châteaux, and innovative New World wineries.
Each wine’s detail page that we built became a mini-tour, complete with:
- Rich storytelling about the vineyard’s history
- In-depth exploration of each grape variety’s traits, including its regional importance
- Profiles of the vintners, including their background, expertise, and more
The Wine Club
Vinovia aimed to create a personalized wine club where customers could subscribe and receive handpicked wines based on their preferences. The challenge was to develop a scalable subscription model with flexible delivery options, such as monthly or quarterly shipments.
We designed a subscription service that lets customers set their preferences, and Vinovia’s founders personally curated a selection of six or twelve bottles each month or quarter. It was more than just a subscription, it became a wine discovery journey, like having a wine expert pick the perfect bottles just for you.
Seamless Wine Shipping
Shipping wine isn’t like shipping books or clothes, there are special requirements and regulations. Vinovia needed a system to integrate with FedEx, but the complexities of shipping alcohol posed significant hurdles.
We tackled this problem head-on by creating a smart shipping system that:
- Calculates exact shipping costs before checkout
- Integrates with FedEx for specialized wine delivery
- Sends timely notifications about delivery status
- Handles next-day delivery options for special occasions
Gifting Wine Now Got Easier
Before Shopify had its own gift card feature, we pioneered a solution that let people share their love of wine. We developed a code-generation system that enabled the issuance of gift cards, which customers could redeem on the Vinovia Wines site. Additionally, we integrated discount coupons to encourage first-time purchases and repeat orders.
The results are worth raising a glass too!
Vinovia had 1,500 wine club members each month, all enjoying personalized wine selections. Here’s what made it all work:
- Wine lovers get personalized recommendations they actually enjoy
- Virtual tours that transport customers to the world's finest vineyards
- Shipping complications? Handled automatically
- Gift-giving made simple and elegant
- Detailed wine information at everyone's fingertips
- Flexible subscription options to suit different preferences
This transformation wasn’t just about selling more wine, it was about building a community of wine lovers who trust Vinovia to guide their wine journey. The platform we created continues to evolve, just like a fine wine that only gets better with age.
